In my first playthrough all of my characters had stat points that add up to around the low 70s e.g. I never got shoved to death because I never gave them a chance to shove me to death. It's all just positioning, you position yourself in such a way that benefits your party and disadvantages the enemy. I played through it before the patch for the shoving thing. Now you just have to deal with the soracks having advantage in the dark. This was made even harder as the game ends if you let one of the essential characters fall. The soracks would knock you to your death with their shove attack. Caer Lem was brutal for low ability characters,( higher ability characters are better able to make their saves against these attacks).
